Mix Tape of the Day: February 13, 2015 - The Best of 2009
Here it is. 2009. The best year ever. The best songs ever.

I almost included this in my Australia mix since a dear friend from Australia introduced me to this song. But then I remembered that she shared it with me right after we had all returned back home to America. Still, it reminds me of that wonderful year.

2009 was when we all started realizing, "Oh dang, this Lady Gaga lady is something special." And this song me filled with such amazing frisson the first time that I knew it would be one of my top songs of the year.

Aww, I hate when they don't have the official video on Youtube. I liked that Bobby Moynihan was the object of desire in an unironic comedic fashion.

This is just a fun song. And it's nice to have a song that's about asking for consent. Other contemporary songs should take note.

Green Day! Finally! This means that my Green Day mix should be on it's way, lest I use them all to fill slots on my best of the year mixes. I love the Full House intro breakdown in the middle of this one.

Ah, finally, Britney Spears has arrived. I am an unashamed Spears fan, and she had a lot of good choices for 2009. Soon, I'll be unleashing my Britney Spears megamix. This one earned the spot on the mix for being able to sneak curse words past the censors. And songs about Amy are always great.

I like Pink a lot more than I realized. I feel like she keeps showing up on all of these year-end lists.

This song reminds me of "Somebody Told Me" by the Killers. That's good enough for me.

I'm assuming this song is being ironic with it's lyrics and subject material. Because it's a lot of fun to sing and I don't want to get in trouble.

I've held off on using this song so often. This is my favorite Taylor Swift song and it convinced me to give her a shot as an artist. It's cliché, but this song speaks to me so much that I'd consider it one of my top 13 personal anthems. Maybe one day, I'll compile that list for you.

Man, I think this is one of the most beautiful sounding songs in existence. And maybe Kelly Clarkson was upset because it sounded exactly like "Already Gone," but hey, she'd get her own great song of 2009. Let "Halo" be.

Okay, I was so tempted to put the Glee version on this list, because it introduced me to the song. (I was aware of it, but the title turned me off and I'd never listen to it the whole way through.) I'll save that version for later, so let's just enjoy the original for now.

Mix Tape of the Day: February 6, 2015 - The Best of 2010
2010 was all about the good, the bad, and the ugly side of love. I mean, every year is about that.

These are my thoughts on Justin Bieber: not a fan. But, for how ridiculous it was when he became big in 2010, I'd have to admit, I found "Baby" to be pretty dope. Kind of like "Friday," I found myself enjoying it unironically quite a bit. Even Ludacris's ludicrous rap breakdown doesn't feel wrong to me. I can groove to this.

And here's my annual Taylor Swift pick. It's odd going back in time with Swift, as things delve back into country territory and hopelessly romantic songs. But she fulfilled that niche so well!

2010 has some very choice romantic memories that will forever remain with me. And scoring those memories is this song.

Oh, those glorious four chords! For a song about dreaming about your exes, it's pretty fun and enjoyable.

Huh, I'm kind of surprised I like this song. I'm not a big fan of Bareilles's style, but this one kind of works for me. I can't stand "Love Song" or "Brave" though. Sorry.

This. It took me a while, and I didn't like it at first, but then I realized that this was Lady Gaga's best song. And I never looked down on her abilities again. That "I don't want to be friends!" moment always gives me chills.

Having been the "you," in this song more times than I can count, I was drawn to this one (especially in 2010).

This was a tough choice. I love the original composition where the songwriter Skylar Grey just sings the female part. But I had to include the more famous version. The back and forth between man and woman in this song is so fraught with emotion (and that video, yeesh) that I had to consider it the best version (as well as the best song of 2010).

Mix Tape of the Day: January 30, 2015 - The Best of 2011
Oof, I had trouble coming up with a complete mix for 2011 without resorting to multiple tracks from the same artist. I even had to include a song that wasn't on the Hot 100. But I think you'll forgive me because it's Friday! Friday! Gotta get down on Friday!

Haha! No regrets! I love this song! Not a Friday goes by that this song doesn't go through my head. And without it, Bad Lip Reading might not even continue to exist today!

Katy Perry was certainly lucky that Rebecca Black got as big as she did or else no one would have noticed her Friday song. My enjoyment of Kate Perry comes in waves and this seems to be the latest song of hers that I regularly enjoy.

This song started gaining traction in 2010, but since it's not on 2010's chart, we get to feature it here. Sorry if you have sensitive ears, but "Forget You" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Two pop songs with the F-word in the title in the same year? What would our forefathers think?! Actually, I was so used to the radio edit, that I never realized there was a more...mature version of the song.

I debated between this and "The Edge of Glory." I picked this one because it goes with that whole self-empowerment theme that all great songs should employ.

"Someone Like You" might be technically better than "Jar of Hearts," but to me, this is like 15 "Someone Like You"s. It's so heart-wrenching.
